Die Hadracha — a documentary film

In the documentary “Die Hadracha” (Hebrew for “training”), eight Jewish young people meet at the end of October 2023 for a training week for prospective youth leaders (called Madrichim*ot). Two weeks earlier, Israel is attacked by Hamas and a war breaks out, which affects some of the participants' families and puts them under emotional strain. The news has an impact on the Jewish community in Germany, but despite the emerging uncertainties regarding the security of Jewish institutions and events in Germany, the training takes place. The contrast between tension and normality is clearly noticeable in the film. The participants discuss current internal association issues, formulate their identity as young Jews in Germany and learn together about the tasks and responsibilities that come with working as a youth leader in a progressive Jewish association. The film offers a deep insight into the discourse within Jewish communities in Germany and shows how young Jews find their identity in the context of the current political situation and growing antisemitism. My original aim was to document the structure and content of the training. However, during post-production, the focus on the identity formation of young Jews in Germany crystallized. The film reflects the reality of Jewish life in Germany — caught between stability and uncertainty.

Im Dokumentarfilm „Die Hadracha“ (hebr. für „Ausbildung“) treffen sich Ende Oktober 2023 acht jüdische Jugendliche zu einer Ausbildungswoche für angehende Jugendleiter (genannt Madrichim*ot). Zwei Wochen zuvor wird Israel von der Hamas angegriffen und ein Krieg bricht aus, der die Teilnehmenden teilweise familiär betrifft und emotional belastet. Die Nachrichten haben Auswirkungen auf die jüdische Gemeinschaft in Deutschland, doch trotz der aufkommenden Unsicherheiten bezüglich der Sicherheit jüdischer Einrichtungen und Veranstaltungen in Deutschland findet die Ausbildung statt. Der Kontrast zwischen Anspannung und Normalität ist im Film deutlich spürbar. Die Teilnehmer diskutieren über aktuelle vereinsinterne Fragen, formulieren ihre Identität als junge Juden und Jüdinnen in Deutschland und lernen gemeinsam, welche Aufgaben und Verantwortungen die Arbeit als Jugendleiter in einem progressiven jüdischen Verein mit sich bringt. Der Film bietet einen tiefen Einblick in die Diskurse innerhalb jüdischer Gemeinschaften in Deutschland und zeigt die Identitätsfindung junger Juden und Jüdinnen im Kontext der aktuellen politischen Lage und des wachsenden Antisemitismus. Mein ursprüngliches Ziel war es, die Struktur und Inhalte der Ausbildung zu dokumentieren. Doch während der Postproduktion kristallisierte sich der Schwerpunkt der Identitätsbildung junger Juden und Jüdinnen in Deutschland heraus. Der Film reflektiert die Realität des jüdischen Lebens in Deutschland — im Spannungsfeld zwischen Stabilität und Unsicherheit.
